Overview

Discover a refreshing escape from Kathmandu’s bustling city on our Chandragiri Hattiban Day Hike. This invigorating trek begins with a scenic cable car journey to the summit of Chandragiri Hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and the majestic Himalayan range. From Chandragiri, your nature adventure truly begins as you set foot on a trail leading through verdant forests towards Hattiban. Guide, transport, cable car tickets, and meals are all taken care of. You just show up.

Most people staying in Kathmandu don’t realize you can escape the city noise and be surrounded by pine forests within an hour. Chandragiri Hill has become popular for its cable car, but the real magic happens when you step off the summit and walk the ridge towards Hattiban. That’s where the crowds disappear and the trail becomes yours.

This is a hike that gives you the best of both worlds – the thrill of a cable car ascent and the quiet satisfaction of a forest walk, all in a single day.

What This Day Hike Looks Like

Your day starts with a hotel pickup in Kathmandu between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. The drive to Chandragiri takes about an hour, winding through the outskirts of the city and into the hills. As you leave the traffic behind, the air begins to freshen and you can see the hill rising ahead.

At the top, you’re at 2,551 meters. The Chandragiri Temple (Bhaleshwor Mahadev) greets you immediately – a sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex is serene, with prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the Himalayas visible from the courtyard. Take some time to explore, take photos, and soak in the spiritual atmosphere.

After about 2 to 3 hours of walking, you reach Hattiban. This is a serene viewpoint – a quiet hilltop where you can see the valley stretched below and the mountains rising above. It’s the perfect place to stop, catch your breath, and enjoy the view.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant or as a packed picnic at Hattiban. You’ll eat with the mountains in front of you and the valley behind you – a dining experience you won’t forget.

After lunch, you’ll either continue a short loop or return along a slightly different trail back to the cable car station, depending on the itinerary. The descent back to the cable car takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. You’ll ride the cable car back down, then drive to Kathmandu, arriving in the late afternoon.

By the time you’re back, you’ll have covered roughly 8 to 10 kilometres over about 3 to 4 hours of walking – and feel exactly the kind of satisfied that a good day outdoors leaves you with. Refreshed. Clear-headed. Glad you came.
