Overview
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a spectacular high-altitude adventure in eastern Nepal, taking you into the remote and pristine landscapes surrounding Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain at 8,586m. The trek offers dramatic mountain views, diverse landscapes, and a chance to experience the traditional culture of remote Himalayan communities.
The trail passes through lush forests, terraced hills, remote villages, and rugged mountain valleys before reaching the impressive Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Along the way, trekkers can enjoy breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga and surrounding peaks while experiencing one of Nepal’s less-traveled trekking regions.
This trek is ideal for experienced trekkers looking for a challenging and remote Himalayan adventure away from the more crowded trekking routes.
Highlights
- Reaching Pangpema Base Camp (5,143m) positions trekkers directly face-to-face with the massive, icy north wall of Mount Kanchenjunga.
- Located inside the restricted Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, this route sees less than 5% of the crowds found in Everest or Annapurna, keeping the wilderness entirely pure.
- Trekkers experience raw, untouched local hospitality in stone-house villages like Ghunsa, tasting local mountain food and meeting indigenous border cultures.
- Walking along the edge of the active Kanchenjunga Glacier while surrounded by a ring of dramatic peaks like Jannu (7,710m) and Kambachen Peak.
