Overview

The Gosaikunda Trek is a short but rewarding high-altitude trek in the Langtang Region, famous for its sacred alpine lakes. Revered in both Hinduism and Buddhism, Gosaikunda (4,380m) attracts thousands of pilgrims during the Janai Purnima festival, but is equally stunning year-round.

The trail begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche, gradually ascending through rhododendron forests, Tamang villages, and high ridges with spectacular views of Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and even distant peaks of Tibet. The highlight is reaching the pristine turquoise waters of Gosaikunda Lake, surrounded by rugged Himalayan landscapes.

This 5-day trek is ideal for those with limited time who still wish to experience both natural beauty and spiritual significance in the Himalayas.

Highlights

  • Highly revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, ancient mythology states that the lake was created by Lord Shiva when he struck his trident (Trishul) into the mountain to extract water to cool his throat after swallowing poison.
  • During the full moon festival in August, thousands of pilgrims hike up to the lake to take a sacred dip in its freezing waters, believing it washes away sins and brings good fortune.
  • Gosaikunda is a designated Ramsar Site (wetland of international importance) and is part of a complex of over a dozen alpine lakes, including the nearby Bhairav Kunda and Saraswati Kunda.
  • During the cold winter months (December to February), the entire lake freezes completely solid, transforming the deep blue waters into a dramatic, surreal sheet of white ice.
